Saggar firing is back.

Or so I say…..

I love the colours that the chemicals and food scraps leave on my pots. A few examples of what goes inside the clay pods I encase them with.

This is how they come out of the pod….

And this is how they going to look on someone’s mantle……..

Results are here

The first firing didn’t go so well so I had to raise the temperature and do it all again. This time with glorious results. I am so happy with the way the colours came out I would like to share them with you…..

And some mugs less colourful. I can’t imagine my coffee in a bright blue mug….. can you?

Excited!

Next week is my first reduction firing after almost 3 years. I hope I still remember how to do it….. For those of you who are not potters reduction firing means you deprive the kiln of oxygen while firing so that the charachter of the glaze and the clay change as a result. I really love the affects of reduction firing but they are very difficult to control. Maybe that is why I like it. Control is not my thing…..

Here are some pots with glazes. Sometimes I like the way they look before the firing more than after…

Back on the saddle!

It has been a long time since I’ve thrown, build or fired anything. Covid had a devastating affect on my pottery but it gave me the opportunity to be creative in many other ways. I will update my ‘About’ page to tell you all about my other creations. Being able to knit, bake and renovate my kitchen kept me sane during the time I couldn’t make pots.

I would however, like to keep this page dedicated to my clay creations.

I have started with a Christmas market at the Hive (@QBNHive.) I thought it symbolic to start at the same place I stoped when the pandemic hit. Meeting people at my table made me realise some really like my work so it made sense to start making again.

Then I joined a wood fire event at the end of last year. These are two of pieces that came out of the kiln.

In the next post I will show you what I’ve been making lately.

I left my blog out

I meant to show the fired pieces and the Xmas fair but I guess having too many places to post on I forgot my own blog.

I have put the images on Instagram and FaceBook so I’m going to put it here now just for history’s sake.  A nice sample of what came out of the fire.

Annual wood firing

Once a year a group of potter get together for the annual wood firing of the groundhog kiln at Strathnairn art centre. It seems that my stuff occupies most of it this year……

Agra and Jaipur

After the amazing high of the Himalayas a visit to the amazing buildings of India. Taj Mahal is not only a the most beautiful building I have ever seen, it is one of the most famous monuments of the world. A few photos of the Taj and some other fortes.

The Himalayas

I have been back home for a couple of weeks now and I have to admit I find it quite difficult, getting back to life as normal after home visits. Having friends here does make it much easier though.

This time I stopped in India before coming back. I visited Jaipur, Agra and Ladakh. The Himalayas are the most incredible place I have ever visited and the Taj Mahal is the most impressive building I have ever seen in person.

As always I will let the picture speak for themselves as I am so not good with words.

As you can see I cannot do without coffee. That one was unexpectedly good.

I will post some photos of the Taj Mahal soon.

Also I am preparing for the Xmas fair with a few Chanukiuit (חנוכיות), and very excited about the up and coming wood firing in Strathnairn.  Hopefully it will be successful.
