My wood craft journey – cont.

I have been having so much fun working at the ACT wood craft guild and at the same time producing some fun wood creations. I have shard some of my items from the ‘introduction to wood working’ workshop earlier on this blog.

Since then I’ve participated in a furniture workshop in which I’ve built a small side table. I have learned that you can’t enclose wood as it needs space to move- that is expand when it needs to, so to carry out my design I had to learn parquetry. The piece in the middle of the table top, is glass. The difference in colour between the two images is due to the finishing touch which is coating. I would have a photo of the whole finished table when I get around to coating the legs.

The next post will be about my first steps with wood turning. stay tuned.

Starting a new craft – Woodwork

When I needed to name my blog I was deeply into pottery and anyone who saw me doing that was sure I will always be doing it. Yes, I love pottery. Still do. But I knew myself enough to know that hurdles along the way might end the love affair and I’ll move to a new medium. After all, I’ve done glass: stained glass, fused and slump glass, cast glass, moved to making beads and jewellery and I love working with glass. My blog then was ‘shyglass’. When I moved to clay (and that story is on this blog) the immediate thought was to name it ’shyclay’ but then I remembered the fate of the old ‘shyglass’ page so I decided on ‘Crafts’. This way I wouldn’t need to change my blog name every time I change my current material of choice. Because that is all it is. I still make beautiful things, just in a different medium. Ands it’s fun. So join me on my new trip working with wood.

My first adventure was carving a spoon and my second was building this box which is designed as a paper drawer. I’m working on a shelving unit to be my pottery display. Some of my earlier wood work is told in this blog.
